Miyota 9075: A Game Changer for True GMT Watches

Miyota 9075: A Game Changer for True GMT Watches

Miyota 9075: The Revolutionary True GMT Movement – Now in the Naos Pro GMT by Sternglas
For those who travel across time zones, are frequently on the move or globally connected, the GMT function has long ceased to be a luxury – it has become essential. Until recently, however, it came at a price. The Japanese Miyota 9075 automatic movement is changing that. It brings the coveted True GMT function into a price range accessible to microbrands and discerning watch lovers alike. In the Sternglas Naos Pro GMT, this movement is now used for the first time – in a timepiece where technical functionality meets design clarity.

How the Miyota 9075 Changed the True GMT Market

For a long time, building mechanical GMT watches was a challenge, especially for independent brands. Without their own movement, most had to rely on expensive Swiss calibers – often without a real GMT function. Instead, only so-called “Caller GMTs” were available, where the GMT hand could be adjusted, but the hour hand remained fixed.
That changed in 2022 with the market launch of the Miyota 9075 caliber. For the first time, a mass producer offered an affordable True GMT movement with an independently adjustable hour hand – a milestone for the industry. Since then, the market for affordable GMT watches has experienced a true boom.

Sleek Design with True GMT Function

A GMT movement doesn’t have to be bulky – the 9075 proves that. With a height of only 4.92 mm, it is just 1 mm thicker than the well-known 9015 with date. Miyota has optimized every component for compactness, allowing brands to implement GMT versions of existing models without major changes to the case design.

The Miyota 9075 in Everyday Use: Noticeable Quality

Miyota focuses not only on precision but also on an excellent tactile experience. Whether setting the date, the GMT function, or winding the movement – the crown operates with clarity and precision. Adjusting the hour hand results in a distinct, satisfying click in both directions – a level of quality typically found in significantly higher price segments.

What Is a True GMT, Anyway?
GMT stands for “Greenwich Mean Time” and is synonymous with watches that show two time zones. There are two types of GMT watches:

Caller GMT (Office GMT): The GMT hand is adjustable, but the hour hand is fixed. Ideal for tracking time across zones for calls or meetings.

True GMT (Traveller GMT): The hour hand is independently adjustable in one-hour steps – ideal for travelers who want to quickly update the local time while keeping home time untouched.

The Miyota 9075 belongs to the second category – a True GMT movement previously found only in luxury watches. Thanks to its technical precision and slim profile, it is now available in watches priced under €1,000 for the first time.

The Naos Pro GMT stays true to Sternglas' design principle of reduction, enhanced by one of the most practical complications for modern life: a True GMT function powered by the Miyota 9075.
Two time zones, one sense of time – the dial displays local time via traditional hour, minute, and second hands. The additional GMT hand and 24-hour scale make it easy to track a second time zone at a glance.
